1700 – 1715
Louis XIV
French Baroque Style, originating in the reign of King Louis III, yet more associated with the king Louis XIV, the Sun King, who ruled from 1643-1715. This baroque style is bold, dramatic, grand, often pompous, exuberant, symmetrical and rather ornamental. The acanthus leaf is a frequently used motif, along with decorative crests that are often made separate from the frame, and positioned as a large ornamental crown. The famous Hall of Mirrors at The Palace of Versailles is indicative of this style.
